How can I check market saturation for a painting franchise in my city?

Count every painting-franchise brand that already lists a location in your metro, map those against the population they need to support one unit, and read each brand’s FDD Item 20 to see how fast new units are opening. An empty-looking map can mean opportunity or a market that has already been tried — the FDD tells you which.

Count who is already there

Start with every brand’s own location finder. List each painting franchise that shows a unit in your metro and how many. This is public and current, and it is the single fastest read on saturation. Before You Franchise does exactly this for ten North Carolina and Alabama metros, refreshed every two weeks — for example Raleigh currently shows 8 brands across 16 listed locations.

Divide by the population a unit needs

A painting franchise needs a certain number of households to support one territory. Take the metro’s population, divide by the units already operating, and compare that to the brand’s own stated territory size in Item 12 of its FDD. If the metro is already carved below the territory size the brand sells, it is saturated for that brand — whatever the sales team says about ‘one territory left’.

Read Item 20 for the trend

A count is a snapshot; Item 20 is the film. It lists openings, closures and transfers over three years. A metro filling fast with no closures is a healthy category. A metro with churn — units opening and closing — is one where the demand doesn’t support the unit economics, and that is the more dangerous kind of ‘open’ market.

An empty map is a question, not an answer

No painting franchise listing a location in your city can mean genuine opportunity — or that brands have looked and passed, or tried and left. The count won’t tell you which; the FDDs and a few calls to owners in neighbouring metros will. Peregrine helps you read that difference rather than guess at it.

Do it for your city

If your metro is one of the ten we scan, the market page lists every brand and location with the ownership behind each. If it isn’t, Peregrine runs the same method on any metro: read the brands’ location lists, size them against population, and check the FDDs for the trend.

Peregrine reads the disclosure document with you.

It runs in your own Claude account, works through the FDD item by item, and gets you ready for the owner calls. $49, once — free during the beta. 7-day money-back guarantee.
